Clean Energy Opportunity Diversity Scholars Announced
Recipients to receive workforce development training in solar and energy efficiency
July 11 , 2017 – Raleigh, N.C.- The N.C. Clean Energy Technology Center (NCCETC) at N.C. State University is pleased to announce the recipients of the Clean Energy Opportunity Diversity Scholarship for two professional certification classes in solar photovoltaic design and installation and building energy efficiency.
Ten applicants have been selected to receive the two 40-hour trainings to be conducted at Halifax Community College. This unique opportunity, provided with support from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, is focused on historically underrepresented applicants in eastern North Carolina. The aim of the training is to increase diversity within the state’s clean energy sector. According to the Solar Foundation’s Solar Jobs Census Map, North Carolina is ranked eighth in the United States for creating solar jobs.Nationally, African Americans represent only 6.6 percent of the solar workforce, the lowest of all groups.
“I am so grateful and excited for the opportunity to learn a new skill, fill a gap in the industry and be a part of an industry that is changing the future,” said Enessia Jones, a scholarship recipient and a single mother of two from Halifax County.
The scholarship recipients range in age, education and life experience. Six recipients live in Halifax, while the others are coming from Washington, Pasquotank, Bertie and Northampton Counties. The scholars have a variety of experience ranging from graduate degrees to early college enrollment, and include teaching, management and technical skills.
The selection process was competitive. NCCETC received more applications than expected for both of the 40-hour workshops. Fundamentals of Photovoltaic Design and Installation training will be offered July 17-21, and a Building Analyst training will be held September 25-29. The trainings will provide a mix of classroom and hands-on experience, and once training is complete, participants will take nationally recognized professional exams from the Building Performance Institute (BPI) and North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) to earn a BPI certification and a NABCEP Associate designation.
An advisory committee helped guide the NCCETC in developing the scholarship, recruiting eligible students and assisting in identifying subsequent internships or employment. In addition to Halifax Community College (HCC), Martin Community College, and the Center for Energy Education, the committee includes representatives from Wilson Energy, Roanoke Electric Coop, Choanoke Area Development Association, the NC Justice Center, Strata Solar, and the NC Sustainable Energy Association. “We are especially grateful to the recruitment help provided by HCC’s P.R.I.D.E group as well as organizations such as the Center for Energy Education and Strata Solar who are offering to interview and potentially employ some of the scholars after their training,” said NCCETC’s Special Project Program Manager Anne Tazewell.
