Guilford County School District Has New Propane-powered School Buses
By: Heather Brutz, Clean Transportation Program Director
Dudley High School in the Guilford County School District, recently unveiled 10 new school buses that operate on propane autogas. The high school also installed new propane fueling infrastructure.

“Guilford County Schools is proud to lead the way in bringing more sustainable and cost-effective transportation options to our community,” said Faye Crowder-Phillips, executive director of transportation for Guilford County Schools. “These propane-powered buses reflect our ongoing commitment to innovation, fiscal responsibility, and environmental stewardship.”
Propane autogas is an alternative fuel that can be used to fuel vehicles. It is usually produced in the United States and therefore helps to reduce dependence on foreign oil. Propane is a lower-carbon fuel than gasoline or diesel and its use can reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions.
Heather Brutz, Transportation Program Director for the NC Clean Energy Technology Center, gave brief comments at the event: “Using propane as a transportation fuel reduces our reliance on foreign oil and supports American energy independence. It also is a cleaner burning fuel than gasoline or diesel and reduces transportation-related emissions.”

The Dudley High School Marching band entertained the crowd at the ribbon cutting ceremony. In addition to representatives from the Guilford County School District, representatives from BlueBird School buses, Gregory Poole Equipment Company, and Sharp Energy.
