REW: Renewable Energy Generation with Small Wind Systems

This week-long workshop focuses on residential (small) wind energy, but will touch on the general concepts of electric generation with wind turbines. This week will cover small wind system types, components, and applications as well as best practices for installation, maintenance and troubleshooting.  Utility and community scale wind facilities will be discussed in general terms. At the end of the week, the class will take-down and install a 2 kW small wind turbine.

REW Learning Objectives:

At the end of the class, you should be able to:

  • Use wind maps, met towers with a variety of sensors and various software products
  • Assess and analyze wind resources and accurately predict the performance of a wind turbine
  • Calculate electrical energy and power
  • Calculate electrical loads
  • Identify optimum sites for wind – Be able to correctly and legally site residential wind systems
  • Identify the right wind turbine and tower height given the site conditions
  • Understand manufacturer’s estimates and then estimate the performance of a turbine given site conditions
  • Safely take-down and install a residential wind system with the supervision of a wind professional
  • Design a basic grid tie and stand alone battery based wind system
  • Understand wind system specification sheets
  • Perform safety standards of installing PV systems
  • Install a small wind  system with a lead installer
